After you have read several books about
the breed and visited kennel and
Labrador club websites (which contain a
wealth of information), it is
recommended that you try to attend a
Labrador Retriever specialty
conformation show…a show in which only
Labradors are exhibited. The entries
are usually in the hundreds (one
specialty routinely draws over a
thousand), the best dogs are shown and
they are judged almost invariably by
breeders who are frequently from
overseas. A day in which one beautiful
Labrador after another is paraded before
you will help you tune your eye to what
championship stock Labradors in the
country look like...and what you should
expect to find when you visit the
kennels of reputable breeders. Also,
for a nominal fee you can purchase a
show catalog which lists the names of
all the dogs entered, the names of their
breeders and the names and addresses of
their owners.
If you attend a specialty show, take a
folding chair with you as frequently
seating is not provided for the general
public. Although exhibitors are
friendly and like to talk about their
dogs, be aware that they are consumed
with preparing their Labradors for the
ring, showing them and getting them
safely back into their vehicles. Do not
“bother” them if they look like they are
busy.
If it is not possible for you to spend a
day at a specialty show, then consider
attending an all-breed show where
Labradors are but one of approximately
150 breeds being exhibited. Labrador
entries at all-breed shows are
relatively small and the type of
Labrador being shown probably varies
more than at specialty shows and the
judges are usually not Labrador
breeders. You can probably find an
all-breed show near you by logging on to
